Creating holiday traditions gives your children the best gift of all during the holiday season: lasting fond memories of holidays of their youth. Spending time together during the holiday season often includes decorating the tree and home. Getting the kids involved making the decorations that are displayed around your home will get them excited about the holidays and proud of their work. Easy, kid-friendly Christmas centerpieces make your child's project the highlight of your holiday meal.

Snow Globe Centerpiece

Display memories of Christmases past or just the past year by making your own snow globes and arranging the globes on a colored charger. Let your children go through your photos and pick their favorites. Clean out a jar or use a mason jar. If desired, paint the lid of the jar with spray or craft paint; the kids can further embellish the jar lid with paint, glitter, stickers or other items. Glue the photo to a piece of scrapbook paper or card stock cut to fit inside the jar, leaving about half an inch on the bottom. Fold the bottom section of paper so that it creates a photo stand and place in the jar, securing with a dot of hot glue. Add craft pom poms or buffalo snow to cover the paper stand. For a centerpiece display, make at least three and vary the sizes of the jars.

Christmas Candle Centerpieces

Candles are on almost every holiday table. Create a centerpiece with your kids by having them decorate a charger for the candles to be displayed on. Let your children loose with a plastic charger from the craft store, on which they can glue pom poms, pine cones, or flowers around the edges. For a less crafty project, a floating candle centerpiece is also kid-friendly. Fill a wide, shallow glass bowl with water, let your children add some drops of red or green food coloring to the water, and float tea lights in the water.

Centerpiece Trees

Nothing says Christmas quite like a Christmas tree. Bring miniature Christmas trees to your table by having your children create a row of trees for your dining room table. Make paper trees by rolling patterned or brightly colored sheets of scrapbook or construction paper into a cone shape. Secure the seams of the paper with a glue stick or with a bit of tape. Let the kids decorate the paper trees with stickers or glitter. For a sturdier centerpiece, get some Styrofoam cones from the craft store and let your kids paint them with acrylic craft paint and decorate with stickers and other embellishments.

Food Centerpieces

Almost every kid likes to play with food. Let your kids make Christmas trees out of sugar cones. Simply embellish upside-down ice cream cones with icing and candy. Place your trees on a plate and use the Christmas tree cones as your centerpiece; and then add a scoop of ice cream and eat them for dessert.

For an instant Christmas touch, unwrap peppermint swirl candies. Have your kids glue the candies to the base of thick pillar candles or a plain vase to put on your table.
